A Study of Home-Based Rehabilitation Programs for Patients with Chronic Stroke

Abstract

|
Objective : This study aims to explore the awareness and necessary components of home-based rehabilitation programs for chronic stroke patients and caregivers, and subsequently use them for developing home-based rehabilitation programs for stroke patients in the future.
Methods : From June 30 to July 31, 2019, we conducted a survey among stroke patients receiving occupational therapy at five hospitals located in Chungcheong Province and their caregivers. We distributed a questionnaire to 200 participants, 100 of whom were patients and 100 were caregivers. We received 62 and 83 completed questionnaires from patients. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS statistical analysis was performed using Version 24.0.
Results : Results from the survey showed that most patients and caregivers had not been involved in any home-based rehabilitation programs. Reasons for this included lack of knowledge on where these programs were available. An examination of the requirements for home-based rehabilitation programs showed that the greatest need for a focus on muscle power and movement control; mobility and self-care; information on health and social security services. Patients' activities of daily life, depression, and quality of life differed based on whether they had previously received a home-based rehabilitation program. Patients who had received home-based rehabilitation programs had significantly higher average levels of daily performance than those who did not(p<0.05).
Conclusion : The results of this study are meaningful in that they can be used to develop a home-based rehabilitation program for stroke patients by considering the awareness and demand for home-based rehabilitation programs.
